Horses To Remember

Magazin
Inducted February 20, 2004

This well-known and loved 15.2 liver chestnut stallion was owned and played by Del Carroll for over 13 years. He won the Hartman award for Best Playing Pony of the U. S. Open in 1972. Sired in Argentina by Cardington King and out of Boutique, his pedigree was geared for racing rather than polo.
He was first acquired by Michael Phipps who raced Magazin with fair success until the age of 5. The Phipps were reportedly quite fond of Magazin but when Del Carroll expresses an interest in the horse, they proposed an unusual challenge, “Phipps told him he could have Magazin if he could make a polo pony out of him” remembers Kathy Linfoot, who ran Carroll’s polo stable and started Magazin in polo.. Magazin took to polo like a duck to water. “He was stick and balled twice and went straight to the polo field recalls Linfoot. The rest is history.
